Host nation France take on the United States in both teams' opening fixture in Group A of the Olympic Games. Les Bleus will have the expectations of a host nation on their shoulders heading into the tournament and unsurprisingly, manager Thierry Henry has picked a very talented squad. However, The Stars and Stripes have proven themselves tough to beat of late and in their last match with France in March, drew 2-2. So which way will our prediction on this key fixture go?
The French start the tournament as favourites, which adds further pressure, but they do have a squad packed with talent. They have picked two goalscoring strikers as overage players, Alexandre Lacazette and Jean-Philippe Mateta, while Sevilla centre back Loic Bade will add experience at the back. Henry has also called up Bayern Munich's new £60m man in Michael Olise, while Rayan Cherki could emerge as one of the stars of the tournament if he can fulfil his potential.
They have warmed up with a series of friendlies, winning against the Ivory Coast (3-2), Paraguay (4-1) and Dominican Republic (7-0). They have been held to a draw though by today's opposition (2-2 back in March), and most recently a 1-1 draw with Japan in Toulon.
Marko Mitrovic's United States team doesn't have any famous names in the squad but they regularly qualify for the Olympics. They drew 1-1 with Spain last time out and before that beat Paraguay 1-0. They have lost a couple of games of late, a 1-0 defeat in Spain against Morocco and then a 2-0 loss at home against Japan.
You can bet that the USA team will be fit, strong and well-organised and will certainly make life tough for France in what should be an entertaining opening game between the two teams.

Our prediction for the France vs. United States Olympic Group A game is: France to win and both teams to score.
After missing out on World Cup glory back in 2022 and under-performing at the European Championships, France manager Thierry Henry will be under no illusions as to the expectations for his team at their home Olympics. The French come into this game with a very strong squad, in good form, scoring plenty of goals. The United States are a decent opponent but not one that this French side should have too much trouble with.
