Steaua Bucarest have one foot in the second qualifying round of the Champions League, ahead of their return leg against Virtus. In the first leg of their encounter on Tuesday, Steaua, playing away in San Marino, won 7-1. In this article, we will have a look at the teams’ stats and numbers then offer a prediction for the match.
Steaua didn’t have the best of finishes in their league last season but had a good preseason and a strong start to the current campaign. Their massive win in the first leg was preceded by a 3-0 win over Corvinul Hunedoara in the Supercupa. However, they drew 1-1 with Universitatea Cluj in their first league game.
Here they will not only be looking to recover, but also keep their five-game winning run going. They scored in all their last five matches, inclusive of preseason games, netting two or more in four. Steaua, however, have just two clean sheets in their last 11 matches.
For the San Marino champions, a 7-1 defeat wasn’t the ideal introduction to a new season. Virtus have an uphill task here if they are to turn the tide in their favor. They aren’t experienced at all in Champions League football and that could explain their home defeat.
The first leg encounter happened to be their first ever Champions League game and it didn’t leave great memories. With their season still off at least for another six weeks, fitness issues could be a major reason for their drubbing. Before meeting Steaua, they had last played competitively in May.
The return leg meeting will be just their third game in two months and the rustiness seen in the first leg is still expected. While they face a high-scoring Steaua side, it is worth noting that in their last three matches, Virtus scored just twice.

Steaua are the clear favorites here based on the first leg result and in their scoring form, they'll definitely be on the front foot in attack. Playing at home makes it even easier for them, and they are clearly facing a weak opponent. In recent matches, the hosts have pronounced themselves in attack and here, they should be able to build on their first leg win.
A good bet for this game would be in the goals market and a trend in these teams' matches bases on the number of goals scored in the opening half.
