The Johan Cruyff Shield will be contested by Feyenoord and PSV this Friday. Feyenoord earned their place in the Dutch Super Cup by winning the Eredivisie last season, while PSV won the 2022-23 KNVB Cup. The league champions secured the title last season with 82 points, seven points clear of PSV in second. They recorded 25 wins, seven draws, and just two losses across the 34-match season. While they did lose the last match of the season against Vitesse, the title had already been secured, and they played the match as a formality. Leading up to that match, though, Feyenoord were on a 13-match winning streak and unbeaten in 26 league matches, dating back to last September. Notably though, the only other loss they conceded in the season was against PSV, which ended 4-3. In the preseason, Feyenoord played five matches and won three while drawing the other two. The league winners are the favourites in this match.
Meanwhile, PSV finished second in the Eredivisie for the third consecutive season last term. They recorded 23 wins, six draws, and five losses in the season but were the highest-scoring team with 89, which was eight more than their opponents. PSV won the KNVB Cup 3-2 on penalties against Ajax after the match ended 1-1 in regulation time. They also won last season’s Super Cup beating the same opponent 5-3. PSV won the final match of the league season 2-1 over AZ, which extended their unbeaten run in the Eredivisie to 16 matches, including 12 wins and four draws. They have gotten the better of Feyenoord in recent times, taking four points from their two league encounters last term and unbeaten against them in their last three meetings. Despite being the underdogs according to the bookmarkers, PSV cannot be counted out of this match.
