Daniel Altmaier is the fifth seed in the Cordoba Open. The German takes on unseeded Federico Coria for a place in the second round of this outdoor clay court tournament. For whoever progresses, there's a second round match against either Albert Ramos Vinolas or Pedro Cachin, both of whom are unseeded. Altmaier is ranked 52nd in the latest ranking list, five places below his career high. The 25-year-old has reached one quarter final this year. That came in Auckland where he beat Felix Auger-Aliassime but then lost to Marcos Giron. He lost to Karen Khachanov in the first round of the Australian Open and now begins his clay court season. Altmaier has won at least 20 matches on clay in each of the past three years. The past two years have seen him win four Challenger Tour events on clay and back in 2020 he made it to the last 16 at Roland Garros.

Federico Coria has lost three of his previous four matches against Daniel Altmaier, all being played on clay. His last two matches against the German have both ended in defeat without him winning a set. Coria is ranked 93rd in the world which is 44 places below the career high he achieved this time last year. He'd slipped out of the top 100 before losing in the final of a Challenger Tour event held in Brazil last week. Before that he'd lost in the first round of the Australian Open and a Challenger Tour clay court tournament in Uruguay. He will hope to match or better last year's performance in this tournament when losing in the final bt doesn't appear to be in that kind of form. We tip Altmaier to continue his good record against Coria and make it into round two.
