The 2023/24 Champions League gets underway with the first round of qualifying fixtures as Romanian champions Farul Constanta host Moldovan champions Sheriff Tiraspol. This is the first of a two-legged tie as the teams will head to Tiraspol for the return leg next Tuesday. Farul Constanța are fresh off winning their first ever Romanian league title in the 2022/23 season. Their home form played a huge part in the club overcoming the likes of FCSB and CFR Cluj as they would ultimately go on to secure the trophy by a rather comfortable seven points. The Sailors were simply stellar at the Viitorul Stadium, winning 17 of their 20 league matches and losing only once. Farul Constanta experienced a rough preseason that saw them fail to win in four fixtures, including losing the final three. A loss in the Romanian Supercup means that the defending champions have now lost their last four games overall.

Their opponents arrive in Romania with their last match having taken place at the end of May. Sheriff were taken to penalties by Balti where they would eventually emerge 7-6 victors to claim their second straight Moldovan Cup title and 12th all-time. That now means over a month has passed since the Sheriff Tiraspol players last took to the field with no pre-season friendlies having been played yet. Looking back at how they finished the 2022/23 campaign, Sheriff did end things with a 13 match unbeaten run. Of those 13 matches, nine would end in a victory for the reigning Moldovan Super Liga. Sheriff performed well as the visiting team last season in the league, winning seven, drawing two and losing only once on the year.
