Both of these players are unseeded and currently ranked outside the top 100. Fabio Fognini takes on Bernabe Zapata Miralles in the first round of the Indian Wells outdoor hard court tournament. The winner will take on the 19th seed Sebastian Baez in round two of this ATP Masters 100 event. Fognini received a wild card to get into this main draw. He's been as high as ninth in the world (achieved in 2019) but was 108th in the latest ranking list. The Italian has played only three tournaments this year and just one on the ATP Tour. That was in the recent Doha hard court event where he lost in the first qualifying round. The others were on the Challenger Tour with a 2-2 record. 

Bernabe Zapata Miralles is ranked 36 places below his opponent and like Fognini, he can't wait for the European clay court season to get underway. The Spaniard has had a disappointing 2024 so far. He even lost twice in his first hard court tournament of the year in Adelaide. Miralles lost in the qualifying rounds, was reinstated as a lucky loser and then beaten in the first round proper. A first round loss to Jiri Leheca in the Australian Open followed with only eight games won in three sets. Another first round defeat followed in Montpellier took place before he headed to the clay courts of South America. His form didn't improve with his only win in four tournaments coming when his opponent retired. We go for Fognini to win this match.
