Eva Lys is having a difficult year. Injuries have hampered her tremendously, and she arrives for this clash in torrid form. The German, who has played just five matches thus far, has managed to win just once.

Her only win came in her first match of the season as she represented Germany at the United Cup. She has lost four matches on the trot, with her recent outing being two weeks ago in Charlton.

Lys’ struggles have seen her drop to 79th currently in the live ranking.

Paula Badosa defeated Lys when they first met. This was last season in Berlin. She won by the loss of four games in the first round. Coincidentally, their second meeting is in Germany and is a tournament opener.

Though she has had an up-and-down season herself, the Spaniard will be confident of another strong display in this fixture. Badosa, who is coming off a disappointing first-round exit in Linz, has compiled a 9-10 record.

This is Badoa’s fourth appearance in Stuttgart. In her three appearances, she hasn’t lost in the first round and has made it to at least the quarter-finals twice.
