Unseeded Rinky Hijikata takes on wild card Ethan Quinn in round one of the Dallas Open. The winner will face either eighth seed Dominik Koepfer or unseeded Aleksandar Kovacevic in the last 16. Hijikata is ranked 88th in the world but last October was as high as 70th. The Australian began the year well by getting to the last eight of the Brisbane International. His next two matches were lost, including a five set defeat to Jan-Lennard Struff in the first round of the Australian Open. His most recent tournament saw him reach the last 16 of a Challenger Tour event held in Burnie. He was the defending champion in that tournament and the unsuccessful defence has seen him slip down the rankings.

Ethan Quinn received a wild card to play in this outdoor hard court event. The latest rankings list has him at a career high 288th. He was outside the top 300 before getting to the final in the recent Challenger Tour tournament held in Cleveland. He didn't beat anyone in the top 180 in that event. Before that he'd been playing on the ITF and Challenger Tours and only won one of his four matches. The 19-year-old (three years younger than his opponent) lost his only previous match against Hijikata. That was on a hard court two years ago in an M25 tournament with Hijikata winning in three sets.
