Espanyol will have a tough opening to their 2025/26 La Liga campaign, playing host to Atletico Madrid. Starting their second straight season in the topflight, the Catalans will be gunning for a better finish than last season's 14th. Here’s our prediction of the match.

When things all fall in place, Espanyol fans will hope the team keeps a wider gap from the relegation spots this season. At the close of last season, only two points separated them from such positions. 

Their preseason form was encouraging enough, as they won four of the six matches played. This should herald an improvement from their one win in the final seven La Liga matches last season.

Atletico Madrid will go into this game as the favorite on paper, but Espanyol have a history of frustrating the Madrid side. While they are unbeaten in the last eight matches against Espanyol, the Catalans have forced draws in the last four meetings. 

Away fans will, however, want to believe the heavy investment put in bolstering the squad makes this their year. Much of their post-season was spent at the Club World Cup, where Atletico suffered an embarrassing early exit. 

They then played two friendly matches, losing 1-0 to FC Porto before beating Newcastle United 2-0.
