Fifth seeded Elina Svitolina takes on unseeded Canadian Leylah Fernndez in the last eight of the US Open. The winner of this match has a tough assignment awaiting them in the semi-finals against either Aryna Sabalenka or Barbora Krejcikova. Svitolina is the world number five but is yet to make it into a Grand Slam final. Coming into this tournament, the 26-year-old won the Chicago Open, her first title success since September 2020. No top 50 ranked players were beaten in Chicago but it must have done wonders for her confidence. It follows her winning a bronze medal at the Olympics, so current form is good. Leylah Fernandez is one of two unseeded players in the last eight. The Canadian began this tournament ranked 73rd but her results in this event have seen her rise to 49th. This match comes a day after her 19th birthday and this is the first time she's made it past the third round in a Grand Slam. It's only the second time that she's played the US Open and last year lost in round two. March of this year saw her win a tournament in Monterry but she didn't build on that. This is the first time since her tournament win that Fernandez has got to the last eight. It's been a tough ride to get this far with wins over Ana Konjuh, Kaia Kanepi, defending champion Naomi Osaka and then Angelique Kerber. Fernandez had to come from a set down to beat both Osaka and Kerber. The pair have had one previous meeting with Svitolina winning in Monterry last year in straight sets.
