Fourth seeded Elena Rybakina attempts to reach the last 16 at Roland Garros for only the second time. Standing between her and a place in the fourth round is unseeded Sara Sorribes Tormo. One was won on clay in Rome, though three wins came when her opponent retired injured. Sara Sorribes Tormo began this tournament ranked 132nd in the world. That's exactly 100 places below the career high the Spaniard achieved three years ago. A six month break was taken by her last year and that's why she has dropped down the rankings. Entry into this Grand Slam was achieved by a protected ranking. Tormo has reached the third round at Roland Garros for the first time in her career. Seven previous visits had seen her only win two matches and none since 2019. This year has seen the Spaniard reach the last eight of a WTA 125 event held in Bogota. Back in Europe, the semi-final of an ITF tournament was reached and a final in Madrid. No wins over top 40 ranked players have been achieved this year. In this tournament, Tomo has beaten Clara Burel and Petra Martic and is now 96th in the live rankings. There's only been one previous meeting between the pair. That was a hard court match in Miami with Tormo winning in three sets. Rybakina has improved a great deal since then and can win this in straight sets.
