El Salvador and Costa Rica face off for the second match of Group C with both nations needing to avoid defeat to stave off potential elimination. Defeats in the first round of fixtures leaves El Salvador sitting third in the standings and Costa Rica sitting fourth. Both trailing first-place Panama and second-place Martinique who sit on three points each. A loss, combined with a draw in the other Group C fixture, would spell the end of the tournament for either El Salvador or Costa Rica.

El Salvador suffered a hugely frustrating 2-1 loss to Martinique in their opener. They conceded twice in the opening 16 minutes and were playing catch-up for the remainder of the game. However, they simply could not find the breakthrough even with Martinique being reduced to 10 men in the 48th minute. A stoppage time penalty only proved to be a consolation goal as El Salvador’s winless run extended to nine games. La Selecta have now lost six of their last seven games, failing to score in four of them and conceding a total of 16 goals. Their performance against Martinique raises some serious concerns for their ability to progress into what is a very open group. El Salvador wastefulness in front of the net has become an unfortunate trend as of late.

Costa Rica enter this fixture following a limp performance against Panama in their opening game. Los Ticos were largely on the back foot for most of the match, conceding in the 23rd minute and later in the 68th. They grabbed a consolation goal in stoppage time but it was a match that Panama never looked like dropping points. For Costa Rica, it means that they’ve now lost their last four consecutive outings, conceding a total of seven goals and scoring just twice in that stretch. Against Panama, Costa Rica managed only six shots and saw only 39% of the possession. It certainly wasn’t an encouraging performance from Luis Fernando Suarez’s men who will quickly need to bounce back or they could be sent packing.
