A first-ever meeting at the AFCON pitting Benin against DR Congo is on the cards this Tuesday. The two nations clash in Group D, which also has Senegal and Botswana. Labeled a clash of the big cats, Benin will definitely start as underdogs. Benin’s Cheetahs are one of the two nations in this group that have never won the AFCON title. Going into this match at the Al Barid Stadium, we have the preview and a prediction below.
While this is the two nations’ first meeting at AFCON, overall it will be the third matchup between them. They twice faced off during the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, with DR Congo winning 3-1 on aggregate.
The Leopards’ highest moments at AFCON were in 1968 and 1974, when they won the title. In the last seven editions, they have qualified six times but have a record they’d want to banish; no team has lost more AFCON matches than DR Congo’s 30.

Congo DR - Benin: Form Analysis
Two-time AFCON champions DR Congo will be among nations bidding to rise to the apex of African football. They have what on paper looks like an easy start, their third match against Benin. In the last two, DR Congo registered a win and a draw.
Having finished fourth in the last edition, the Leopards will be bidding for a deeper run. Their form ahead of this competition works well in their favor, after winning four of the last five matches.
Sebastien Desabre’s last defeat was in the World Cup qualifiers, at home to Senegal. That was their third loss in 15 matches.
DR Congo have only lost three of their last 15 matches.
Benin are gunning for their first ever win against DR Congo, as they mark their fifth appearance at this level. Only once have they advanced past the group stages at this tournament, but they had a good World Cup qualifying run to look back to.
Under Gernot Rohr, Benin only missed out on the World Cup qualifying playoffs on the final day after falling 4-0 to Nigeria. That, however, was the first of two straight defeats ahead of this game.
The Cheetahs will hope to do better, especially in defence, having conceded seven times in just their last two matches. They failed to score in those two matches and also lost seven times in 10 away games.

Congo DR & Benin Squad Analysis
DR Congo could afford to leave Newcastle United forward Yoane Wissa out of their squad for this tournament. The former Brentford man scored in his last outing with DR Congo but afterwards went into a lengthy injury layoff, which didn’t favor his chances. He is now fully fit but not in Morocco with the Leopards.
Meanwhile, Mario Stroeykens will wait longer for his DR Congo debut after switching nationalities from Belgium. The Anderlecht midfielder is out with a knee injury.
Against DR Congo, Aiyegun Tosin will be gunning for his fifth international goal for Benin.
Stéphane Mounié and Andreas Hountondji will hope to build on their scoring runs in the qualifiers. The two scored twice each to finish as Benin’s leading scorers.
While their returns look dismal, Benin have the benefit of having played together for long and can rattle even the best. At least six members of the squad picked for AFCON started in each of the matches in their qualifying campaign.

Our Congo DR vs Benin Prediction
Benin had a blistering run in the recently concluded World Cup qualifiers, but it all ended in disappointment. They will be looking to start another fantastic run, but first they need to lift themselves from two straight defeats ahead of this match.
It will not be a very comfortable outing for them against this Congolese side. DR Congo are not only enjoying good form, but they are also more experienced at this level and have better players. Our prediction for Congo DR v Benin is that Congo DR wins.
Congo DR vs Benin - Other Interesting Predictions
DR Congo win to nil
In the last meeting between these nations, DR Congo won two to nil. They are coming here still on a good run. They’ve not only posted wins in their recent matches but also did so with clean sheets.
