Dominic Thiem is seeded fourth for this tournament and has a great recent record at Roland Garros. Last year saw him lose to Rafael Nadal in the final and the two years before that saw him reach the semi-finals losing to Nadal and Novak Djokovic. He has had an up and down clay court season with a last sixteen loss in Monte Carlo but then won in Barcelona with a straight sets win over Nadal before beating Daniil Medvedev in straight sets to go through the whole tournament without dropping a set. Madrid saw him beat Roger Federer before losing to Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals but then lost in the last sixteen in Rome. All of his wins in this tournament have been four-set victories.

Gael Monfils is seeded 14th but ranked 17th in the world. It's 11 years since his best performance at the French Open when reaching the semi-finals. At that time his opponent in this match was only 11 years old. Since then he's only made it to three quarter finals here, the last being in 2014. This is his fourth clay court tournament of the season and his best result was a run to the quarter finals in Portugal where he lost to the world number 167 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Madrid saw him lose to Roger Federer in three sets (after losing the first one 6-0) and lost to 88th ranked Albert Ramos-Vinolas in Rome. He's yet to drop a set at Roland Garros but hasn't beaten anyone ranked in the top 40. This looks booked for a Dominic Thiem victory to set up a possible quarter final against Juan Martin del Potro.
