Daria Kasatkina, the sixth seed at the Eastbourne International will begin her campaign at the competition against unseeded Wang Xinyu. They will battle in the second round with the winner progressing to play Yuan Yue or Anastasia Potapova for a quarter-final berth.

Kasatkina is defending the over 300 points she picked up in her run to the final here last year. That was her best result in this event in what was her fifth appearance.

The Russian has made it to at least the quarter-finals in her last two appearances here. She has had a slow start to her grass campaign which began in Berlin where she was eliminated in the second round. Kasatkina sits 14th in the WTA rankings and has won 21 matches, resulting in three runner-up finishes.

Wang Xinyu defeated Kasatkina in their only encounter to date. That was on home soil at the China Open last year.

She won in straight sets and will be seeking another dominant display to start off her debut in this event.

Wang is coming off a first-round exit in Berlin as a qualifier. She has compiled a 13-8 record on grass in her career.

Wang has however never won more than once on the surface in the main draw at tour level. A semi-finalist in Hua Hin earlier this year, Wang has compiled a shaky 19-15 record and has suffered four first-round losses. She is currently ranked 40th in the WTA.
