It was clear that coming into this tournament, Daniil Medvedev was one of the form players. He had reached the final in Washington and then followed that up by winning the Cincinnati Masters. He has continued that fine form in this US Open and reached his first ever Grand Slam semi-final. Medvedev beat Stan Wawrinka in the quarter finals and again the match went to four sets, that's the third round in a row that has happened. He clearly has the better form of these two players and he has won the only previous meeting with Dimitrov on a hard court surface.

He now takes on Grigor Dimitrov who is unseeded and currently ranked 78th in the world. This is his third Grand Slam semi-final but the first since the 2017 Australian Open. He has never previously made it past the fourth round at this tournament. He's been in much better form this time though and showed that when beating Roger Federer in five sets after trailing by two sets to one. Before that win over the third seed, Dimitrov had a smooth ride to the last eight and didn't even need to get on court when his second round opponent pulled out injured. Medvedev is the player in the best form here and can get the win to reach the final.
