Collins, who is back in Strasbourg after a five-year hiatus, is having the best season of her career. It is rather fitting that this is happening in her last season as a professional. Collins, who is set to retire at the end of the season, has won two titles so far.

Katerina Siniakova defeated Yulia Putintseva in the first round in straight sets. She won the first set 6-0 before relinquishing five games in the final set. This was her 17th win of the season and marked a winning return to this WTA 500 tournament after four seasons. The world number 34 has been alternating between the tour and challenger circuit and has recorded her best result in the latter. This also happens to be on a clay surface. The 28-year-old won the Lleida Challenger last month. She has struggled at tour level and only once has she won multiple matches at a tour event this year. This was in Doha where she would eventually lose to Collins in the third round. This is the fourth time the two will be meeting and the winner will play Clara Burel or Elina Svitolina in the quarter-finals.
