Daniel Evans and Arthur Rinderknech, both unseeded, will meet in the first round at the Lyon Open. The winner will then play Jaume Munar or Frances Taifoe for a place in the quarter-finals. Daniel Evans made it to the quarter-finals in Bordeaux in his last outing. It was the first time he had won multiple matches at an event this year. The Briton is having a torrid season and has so far won just five times in 17 outings. Before playing in Bordeaux, he had lost five matches in a row. Evans isn’t a strong clay performer and not since 2013 has he finished a season with a winning record on the surface. This year, he has lost five of seven fixtures on clay. He starts the week up seven places to 60th in the live ranking thanks to his run to the last eight in Bordeaux.

Arthur Rinderknech is back for a fourth time in Lyon. The Frenchman made the quarter-finals in his debut campaign in 2021. In the last two seasons however, he hasn’t been able to go past the second round. The 28-year-old is struggling with his form as well but he has fared much better than Evans. He has compiled a 16-15 record alternating between the tour and challenger circuits. The majority of his defeats have come on clay where in nine outings, he has lost six times. Rinderkenech won the Lille Challenger back in March. Since then he hasn’t been able to string up a winning run and has won just five of 13 matches. Rinderknech, who is placed at number 73 in the live ranking, was eliminated in round one in Rome last time out.
