Coventry City vs Manchester United Prediction & Betting Tips - FA Cup

by Ian John | in FA Cup Prediction

The second FA Cup semi-final takes place on Sunday at Wembley. Championship playoff hopefuls Coventry City take on last year's beaten finalists Manchester United in a tie that will bring Sky Blues manager Mark Robins up against the club where he made his name as a young striker. Erik Ten Hag's Red Devils have not had the best of seasons but start the game as the hot favorites to reach a record 22nd FA Cup Final. Either Manchester City or Chelsea will lie in wait in the final for the winner.

Coventry City - Manchester United: Form Analysis

Coventry City currently occupy seventh spot in the Championship table, but are now eight points adrift of the playoff places. They do have a game in hand on West Brom and Norwich in fifth and sixth, but their chances of another playoff tilt look slim. In the FA Cup though, this is their best performance since winning the competition in the 1986/87 season. The Sky Blues have rattled in an impressive 19 goals in just five games in the tournament. Defeating Oxford Utd 6-2 in the 3rd Round, then a 1-1 draw away to Sheffield Wednesday was followed by a 4-1 home win. Maidstone then were thrashed 5-0. In the quarter-finals, an extraordinary double-strike of goals deep in injury time saw Mark Robin's team turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 victory over Premier League Wolves. However, they were well beaten last weekend, suffering a 3-0 defeat away to Birmingham City.

It has been a tough season in the Premier League for Erik Ten Hag and Manchester United. Seventh in the table is well below where United wanted to be at the start of this campaign. Without a win in four in the league, United have fared better in the FA Cup. They played their first three ties away from home, winning them all at the first attempt. A 2-0 win at Wigan followed by a 4-2 win over Newport County and then a last-gasp 1-0 win at the City Ground against Nottingham Forest. That set up a dramatic FA Cup quarter-final with rivals Liverpool, which went to extra-time with United winning an incredible match 4-3, due to Amad Diallo's injury time in extra time winner. United have drawn their last two games, both 2-2, at home to Liverpool and last weekend away to Bournemouth.

Coventry City & Manchester United Squad Analysis

Coventry City boss Mark Robins had some positive news on the injury front this week. Midfielder Jamie Allen, who has been out since February, stepped up to first team training this week and Robins said he “may end up sneaking onto the bench”. Tatsuhiro Sakamoto will not be available as he recovers from his long-term injury and playing midfielder Kasey Palmer is suspended for the semi-final having picked up two yellow cards in the earlier rounds of the tournament. Matt Godden returned to the bench against Birmingham last weekend, but the experienced striker did not get on the pitch, giving his calf a further seven-days to heal ahead of this huge game.

Manchester United's defensive injury crisis shows little signs of abating. Defenders Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof and Raphael Varane are all ruled out. So too is French striker Anthony Martial. Jonny Evans is a major doubt for the semi-final, but could be fit to return next weekend. Harry Maguire missed training earlier in the week but is expected to be fit to play in the game with Coventry. Scott McTominay will be a game-time decision after only training for part of the week, but Anthony has been passed fit. A key man for United could be Alejandro Garnacho, with the young Argentina-born star being one of their bright spots of the season so far along with midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.

Our Coventry City vs Manchester United Prediction

Could this be another FA Cup giant killing? Such feats in the semi-finals of this competition are somewhat rare and comparing both teams, it is clear Man Utd are the huge favourites. Coventry beat Wolves in extraordinary circumstances in the quarter-finals. It would take an equally unlikely turn of events for them to get the win here given the gulf in talent between the two teams. Our prediction for Coventry v Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final is for Manchester United to take the win and a spot at Wembley for the final.

Marcus Rashford (Manchester United) to Score at Any Time

Marcus Rashford has had a miserable season for Manchester United. Accused of a lack of effort by many, he has scored seven goals in 31 Premier League appearances, with two assists. He has also found the net in the FA Cup. The England star has scored against Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham this season, showing he turns up in the big games for United. Rashford to score at any time is our second prediction for the game.
