Cori Gauff has looked sluggish on her Rogers Cup return and has been forced into a decider in each of her two fixtures. She first had to dig deep against compatriot Danielle Collins, and then Veronika Kudermetova offered another stern test.
All in all, the world number two showed why she is one of the top players in the world by withstanding the pressure. Gauff, on a 33-10 record and second in live rankings, won the French Open and finished as runner-up in Rome and Madrid.
Victoria Mboko held her own when she faced off with Gauff in Rome back in May. The teenager, who is having her best tour campaign, stunned Gauff by taking the first set and forcing a decider.
With a dominant run this week, the Canadian will fancy putting the world number two to the sword this time around. Mboko has won two of her three matches in Montreal without dropping a set.
One of those victories was against former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin. Mboko, who has propelled a massive 20 places to 65th in the live ranking, defeated Marie Bouzkova in three sets in the last round.
