Marseille will look to improve on their away record when they travel to struggling Clermont in their next Ligue 1 game. Hosts Clermont are bottom of the standings going into this game, while Marseille are ninth and struggling to rise into European football slots. At this point of the season, it is clear Clermont will not match the heights of 2023, when they finished eighth. Their top priority at the moment is set on survival, being five points below the safety line. The 0-0 draw they registered last time out marked a sixth winless outing in all competitions. They have three losses in that period and have managed just one outright win in their last 14 matches. it hasn’t been rosy at home either, with Clermont only winning once in the league at home this season. From a possible 33 points at home in Ligue 1, Clermont have bagged just seven points. Scoring in six of their last eight league matches is positive, as far as their consistency in attack is involved. However, Les Lanciers have just two clean sheets in 12 league games.

Jean Louis Gasset seems to have rejuvenated Marseille since his arrival. The former Ivory Coast manager has been in charge for two matches, both of which Marseille have won. Pierre Emerick Aubameyang has scored three times in those two matches and will be the man in focus on the pitch. The most recent two of the three goals came in Marseille’s 4-1 win over Montpellier in their last outing. Scoring seven goals in their last two matches, Marseille can easily be said to have found their footing. However, it is the defence that will worry the new coach more. They have no clean sheet in their last nine matches. Marseille have played back-to-back home matches and Gasset will want to see how his charges cope on the road. That will be a big test for the team, having failed to win in four straight away matches. Their last two away games in Ligue 1 ended in defeats, without Marseille scoring. However, in their last three meetings with Clermont, Marseille posted straight wins. That run includes a 2-1 victory at home in December.
