Ninth-placed GD Chaves will host fourth-placed Sporting Lisbon in round 21 of the Portuguese Primeira Liga on Monday. Chaves have picked up 26 points so far in the season while Sporting have 38 points. Chaves come into this game having won only once in the last six league matches played this year. In their last game, they drew 0-0 away to Vizela. The draw was their fourth in six matches in 2023 proving that they are difficult to break down once again. Chaves have drawn more matches (8) than they have won (6) or lost (6). The bulk of their losses have come on the road and Sporting should be wary of this as Chaves have been more formidable at home. Sporting are a long way off the title race. Their tally so far places them 13 points behind in the Champions League automatic places and eight from the qualifiers of Europe’s premier club competition for next season. Last time out in the league, they lost 2-1 at home to rivals Porto, which ended a three-game winning streak that had seen them score eight goals and concede just one. They have been lackluster away from home in the league and have won just four matches and lost a similar number. They however come into this match having won their last away game, beating Rio Ave 1-0. Before that, they had drawn 2-2 with league leaders Benfica. Of the 10 league matches they have played away, they have failed to score only three times and have scored two or more goals in six games. The last three matches between Sporting and Chaves have produced four red cards.
