League Phase winners Olympique Lyon travel to Spain this week, where they will battle against Celta Vigo in the first leg of their Europa League round of 16 tie. This game will mark the first-ever meeting between these two sides, and below we have a prediction for the match.
While Lyon advanced to the knockout rounds by finishing with the best record at the league stage, Celta Vigo qualified for the round via the playoffs. The Spanish side is enjoying a good run of results, and the bookies have them as the favorites to win this match.
They also have a share of the spoils as the second most likely result. Lyon are targeting back-to-back quarter-final appearances in this competition, but their hosts have been on a good run lately. The French side is looking to snap a four-game winless run here and will be aware that Celta have already beaten two French sides this season.

Celta Vigo - Lyon: Form Analysis
Celta are through to the knockout rounds of a European tournament for the first time in nine years. The last time the La Liga side made it to the second round was in the 2016/17 season, as they reached the UEL semi-finals. That feat remains their best-ever run at a UEFA club competition, and they will be looking to go much further this season.
Os Celestes had a shaky league stage campaign, winning four and losing three of eight games to finish 16th. In the playoffs, Claudio Giraldez’s men beat PAOK 3-1 on aggregate with back-to-back wins. Those two victories were part of a four-match winning streak that was cut short in a 2-1 loss at home to Real Madrid in La Liga.
Celta have beaten two French sides, while Lyon have lost to a Spanish team.
Olympique Lyon were in top form during the league phase and will hope to keep this momentum. Les Gones won seven of their eight first-round matches and finished ahead of Aston Villa, who also managed seven wins, by goal difference.
Lyon’s only loss, however, came in a battle against a Spanish opponent. Playing away to Betis on matchday four, the French heavyweights went down 2-0, which is the only time they failed to score. Lyon have made it to the quarter-finals of the UEL in each of the last two seasons they appeared in the tournament.
