Casper Ruud starts his title defence at the Geneva Open on Wednesday with a second-round battle with unseeded J.J Wolf. Top seed Ruud has won the last two editions of the Geneva Open and is now aiming to become the first player to win three. As expected, he has been superb on clay this season with 10 of his overall 15 wins coming on the surface. He has already won one title this season – in Estoril – and made it to the semifinals in Rome. His form on clay has seen him consolidate fourth place in the world rankings. Ruud has never played Wolf before and is ranked 45 places above him in the ATP official rankings. Progressing from this tie will set up a quarterfinal showdown with either unseeded Nicolas Jarry or sixth-seed Tallon Griekspoor.

J.J Wolf has had some decent showing on clay this season, with five wins from the eight matches he has played. His latest victory came in the first round where he defeated Hugo Dellien by straight sets. Wolf is making his debut in Geneva. However, the American hasn’t really been stable this season, with 14 wins and 10 losses from the 24 matches he has played. This form has seen him slide in and out of the top 50 and is currently ranked 49th in the ATP. Wolf has had his most success this season on hard courts. He set a new personal record in a Grand Slam by reaching the fourth round in Melbourne. This was followed up by a semifinal appearance in Dallas.
