Casper Ruud is the ninth seed at Indian Wells and takes on unseeded Arthur Fils for a place in the last 32. The winner will face either Cameron Norrie or Gael Monfils with a place in the quarter finals of this outdoor hard court event on the line. Ruud has seen his form improve in recent weeks and got to the final in Acapulco last week. That was an outdoor hard court tournament as is this one. That was his second recent outdoor hard court final having also reached that stage in Los Cabos. He received a first round bye in this Masters 1000 tournament and then beat qualifier Lucas Klein in straight sets. That's taken him up to eight in the live ATP rankings. This is only his second match against Fils. The other was won by his opponent last year but that was played on clay.

Arthur Fils was ranked 43rd when this tournament began. He'll be hoping to get into the top 32 to ensure a seeding at Roland Garros. His year began well with a quarter final in Hong Kong and then the last four in Auckland, both outdoor hard court tournaments. It didn't go so well at the Australian Open where he lost in round two. Then he headed to South America for their clay court season and got to the last eight in Santiago but only needed to win one match to do so. Before this tournament he'd won one of his last five matches. It's gone better so far this week though with two wins and beat the 23rd seeded Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the last round. We tip Ruud to win this match.
