Brazil face Japan in their second, and vital, match in Group C of the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament. Led by venerable captain Marta, the Selecao will confirm a place in the knockout phase with a win. For Japan’s ladies, a win would put them back in contention in what is undoubtedly the toughest of the three groups in the women’s competition. What is our prediction for this incredibly even contest?
In their opening game of the Olympics, Brazil’s women defeated Nigeria 1-0 in Bordeaux. Gabi Nunes scored the winning goal. That win means Brazil has won their last three matches and only lost one of the last eleven matches, a 1-0 defeat away to the United States in March.
Japan’s women faced Spain in their opener. Futoshi Ikeda’s team took the lead in that game, but Spain hit back, scoring twice to claim a 2-1 victory. However, with two of the three best third-placed teams to qualify for the knockout phase, Japan’s women are not out of the race just yet, and they are more than capable of getting a result against Brazil.
The teams have met three times since November 2023. The first two matches were in Brazil, with Brazil winning 4-3 in the first game and Japan winning 2-0 in the second match a few days later. They renewed their rivalry in April at the She Believes Cup in the United States, where they drew 1-1 after 90 minutes before Brazil landed a 3-0 penalty shootout win.
With difficult final games in the group, both teams will want to take at least something from this evenly-matched contest.
