Borussia Dortmund are on the cusp of winning the Bundesliga; a win at home to Mainz in their final game will do. Going into Match Day 34, Dortmund lead Bayern by two points and Mainz are ninth with a chance of finishing eighth. Albeit shaky, Dortmund made no mistake in their last game, beating Augsburg 3-0 away from home. The last two goals in that game came in the final six minutes despite Augsburg playing with 10 men from the first half. Their third straight win was a perfect result to take advantage of Bayern Munich’s loss earlier. That win placed them in pole position to claim their first league title since 2012. Dortmund will go into this game unbeaten in their last seven matches, five of them ending in wins. They’ve only failed to score once in 10 matches, while in eight of the 10, they’ve scored two or more. Dortmund will however have to work on their defence, coming into this game with just three clean sheets in 10 games. However, in their last four meetings with Mainz, they have just one clean sheet, but straight wins. The hosts have 11 straight home wins in Bundesliga, and are unbeaten in 14.

Mainz are set for a mid-table finish, and can make it better with an eighth placed finish if results elsewhere work. However, targeting a win here is a tall order, considering Dortmund’s home form. Moreover, Mainz are coming into this match on a poor run, of four straight losses. They failed to score in two of the four losses, and conceded two or more in each of the four. The visitors have no clean sheet in the last five matches, each of which has had over 2.5 goals. Their last win was against Bayern Munich and they also beat Leipzig earlier. With a run of two straight away losses, they may fail to do Bayern a favor here. Mainz have also failed to score in the last two away matches, losing 3-0 in both. While they need a point to secure a top half finish, three could see them seal eighth place. Still they don’t have much to play for.
