Bologna - AC Milan: Form Analysis
There’s a lot riding on the Milan v Bologna clash in the cup competition. This has lately looked like Milan’s surest route to the Europa League, now that the Champions League seems tricky.
The Rossoneri have lately switched to a 3-4-2-1 formation, and so far it is proving to be a masterstroke from Sergio Conceicao. They have posted four straight wins across all competitions for the first time this season.
This run started with a 3-0 victory against archrivals Inter Milan in the semi-final return leg. That completed a 4-1 win on aggregate in the semis. Right ahead of this match, Milan outclassed Bologna in their latest Serie A meeting, coming from behind to win 3-1.
Bologna last won the Coppa Italia in 1974 and Milan in 2003.
Bologna have largely been the weaker side in matches against Milan. This season, however, they claimed a 2-1 win in February. Having never lost a Coppa Italia final, they will hope this piece of history plays in their favor again.
Like Milan, Bologna have also fallen out of European places in Serie A. One win in their last six league matches threatens their Champions League hopes, so they will at least want the Europa League assurance.
That can come with winning this Wednesday game. This will be another big test for Bologna, who completed a 5-1 aggregate win over Empoli in the semis to set up this match.

While changing a winning team is mostly frowned upon, Conceicao is likely to make a few here. Santiago Gimenez came off the bench with Milan trailing and 25 minutes remaining to score twice in the last match.
With three goals in three matches, he has made a strong case for a starting berth. Also, Rafael Leao is returning from suspension and will likely get his place in the starting team.
Milan’s new formation has suited him, as he now has to do more attacking and less defending. Christian Pulisic and Tijani Reijnders add to Rossoneri’s firepower. Together, the two have 45 goal contributions in all competitions this season.
AC Milan are sweating over Fikayo Tomori’s availability for the Coppa Italia final.
The remainder of the season will be defining for Bologna, and the one person they will want in top form is Riccardo Orsolini. The Italian has 15 goals in all competitions and scored in the Friday meeting between these teams.
With Orsolini starting on the flanks, it remains to be seen who spearheads the attack between Santiago Castro and Thijs Dallinga. Castro has been destabilized by injury lately and scored the latest of his 10 goals in mid-March.
That form could force Vincenzo Italiano to start with Dallinga instead. The Dutchman is his leading scorer in this competition with three goals and comes with an xG of 2.28.
