The EFL Championship is back in full swing, and the games are coming in thick and fast, with Blackpool hosting title contenders Sheffield United at the Bloomfield Road Stadium on Thursday night. The visitors come into this game in sensational form, winning seven of their last eight matches, including a comprehensive 3-1 home win against Coventry on Boxing Day. The Blades are currently in second place in the league, with 47 points in 24 games. Sheffield United’s defence has been their greatest asset this season, conceding only 21 goals, which is the lowest in the league so far. They are level on points with league leaders Burnley, who have a game in hand. Sheffield’s away form has been good this season, bagging eight wins in 12 matches on the road. It seems increasingly likely that the EFL Championship is turning into a two-horse race this season, with the top two teams starting to open up a considerable margin between themselves and the chasing pack.

Blackpool, on the other hand, is in all sorts of problems. The hosts head into this match third from the bottom and firmly in a relegation scrap with Wigan and Huddersfield at the wrong end of the table. They’ve not won at home or away in their last seven matches; however, they are unbeaten in their last three matches, drawing each match since the World Cup break. Blackpool managed to graft a hard-earned point in their last match to Hull City on Boxing Day despite going down to 10 men. Blackpool has not won at home since early October and come up against a Sheffield United side that will be in no mood to break their recent excellent form. It’s going to take an incredible effort from the home side to come away with anything in this one.
