Birmingham City host Middlesbrough in the Championship on Tuesday night with the Blues predicament in the Championship now considerably worse after the weekend's results. Birmingham's last minute 1-0 defeat at Millwall has seen the Blues drop down to 21st in the table, just one point better off than Huddersfield and Sheffield United behind them in the relegation spots. Three defeats in their last four games, where they have conceded nine goals and scored 5, have seen them dragged into the battle for survival at the foot of the Championship table. Their home form, which ranks 13th in the Championship, is their one saving grace as they have lost just four games at St. Andrews this season and have a +4 goal difference in home matches (compared to -19 in away games). 

Michael Carrick's Middlesbrough have been dogged by inconsistency this season, often unable to string a positive run of results together to push them into serious contention for the playoff spots. After three wins and two defeats in their last five in the Championship, this year's Carabao Cup semi-finalists lie 11th in the table having scored and conceded 52 goals exactly. After starting the season so poorly, Boro then went on a six game winning streak from September to October but since then have not been able to string more than two wins in a row together in the league. A win here could still give them a chance of the playoffs, but their consistency will have to improve over these last 10 games of the season in order to push themselves into contention for the top six.
