The 12.5km Mass Start is the final Biathlon event for the women at the Winter Olympics. The action is on Saturday so let’s take a look at the leading contenders and make a prediction.
France have enjoyed a huge games, with Lou Jeanmonnot picking up two gold medals for them. Both of those have come in relays, yet to win gold on her own, but she was only beaten a hair in this event at a World Cup meeting back in December.
It has been an exceptional games for Julia Simon, the winner of three gold medals to this point. One of those was the 15km Individual, the longest event, so this 12.5km will be no issue. She won the most recent Mass Start on the World Cup tour.
Lisa Vittozzi took the gold in the 10km Pursuit, much to the delight of the home crowd. She didn’t miss a single target in four trips to the range that day, similar would see her in with a big shout.
The December Mass Start contest in the World Cup was won by Maren Kiirkeeide who has already enjoyed a winning Olympics, taking gold in the 7.5km sprint before a silver in the 10km pursuit. She is another who needs consideration.
