Benfica host Rio Ave for Round 9 of Liga Portugal. It’s all going well in Lisbon at the moment. Benfica are joint-top of their UCL group after picking up an important draw against French heavyweights PSG in midweek. It also extended their unbeaten streak, with Benfica now being fifteen games unbeaten across all competitions, their best start since 11/12 when they went without a loss in their first twenty-two. On top of that, their record at the Da Luz speaks for itself. They are unbeaten in their last twelve there, winning eleven of those. They have also scored more than once in eleven of those, their run only blemished by Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with PSG. To top it all off, Roger Schmidt’s side have an impressive record against Rio Ave, against whom they’ve never lost at home, winning their last nine home meetings on the bounce. 

Rio Ave’s campaign has been mixed so far. They claimed an important victory last time out against Santa Clara, yet it was just their second in the last eight games. They also picked up their first clean sheet in eight at the weekend, having let in six goals in their last four games. When it comes to their away form, they have drawn their last three games on the road, yet wins have been hard to come by, having claimed just one in their last seven outings. Rio Ave also have a dreadful record against Benfica, against whom they have never won in twenty-three encounters at the Da Luz, having lost their last nine there on the spin.
