Neither of these two players have previously reached the final of this Masters tournament. Taylor Fritz hadn't made it past round three in the past but has been in top form in Toronto. In the quarter-finals, he defeated Andrey Rublev iin straight sets. That took him to fourth in the live rankings.
Only one set has been dropped by Fritz so far. That was against Jiri Lehecka in round four. This is his second match against Shelton. He won the first in 2023, a three-set win in the Indian Wells hard court tournament.
Ben Shelton defeated Alex de Minaur 6-3 6-4 in the quarter-finals and is seventh in the live rankings. He's dropped two sets so far this week in matches against Brandon Nakashima and Flavio Cobolli.
He is in his second successive hard court semi-final after also reaching this stage in Washington last month.
