The 15th seed at the French Open, Ben Shelton, will play unseeded Hugo Gaston in the tournament’s first round. Shelton is back in Paris for a second successive year and is seeking his first main draw victory here. The American was defeated in his debut last year in the first round by Lorenzo Sonego. Shelton made his Grand Slam main draw debut in 2022 and this is the only major in which he is yet to record a win. A semi-finalist at the US Open last year, Shelton has compiled a 17-10 record and has achieved his best result on clay. The 21-year-old earned his second career tour title on home soil at the US Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston. He has also recorded semi-final finishes in Dallas and Auckland. The world number 15 is coming off a second-round exit in Geneva.

Hugo Gaston is coming off a run to the quarter-finals in Lyon as a qualifier. He lost in three sets to eventual champion Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. The finish was his best result at tour level this year. This run and his previous successes at Roland Garros should have the Frenchman confident of causing an upset against Shelton. Gaston is making his fifth appearance at the French Open where his best result was a run to the fourth round in 2020. Last year however he was eliminated in the first round after making the third round the year prior. The 23-year-old’s run in Lyon has catapulted him up a massive 16 places and right back into the ATP top 100. Gaston, who has compiled a 14-17 record with five wins on clay, is currently placed at number 88 in the live ranking. The winner here will then take on Gabriel Diallo or Kei Nishikori.
