Australia vs Korea Republic Prediction & Betting Tips - Asian Cup
by Joseph King | in Football Predictions
Two of the region's best teams face off in the marquee matchup of the AFC Asian Cup quarter-final as Australia takes on South Korea. It’s a rematch of the 2015 final in which Australia prevailed 2-1 in extra time to win their first ever title in this competition. The winner of this clash will progress to the final four in a semi-final matchup with either Tajikistan or Jordan and be overwhelming favorites to make it to the final. These sides appear very evenly matched with only a single spot separating them in the FIFA rankings. South Korea currently holds the 23rd position in the rankings while Australia comes in just behind at 25th.

Australia - Korea Republic: Form Analysis
Manager Graham Arnold likely couldn’t have hoped for a better stretch of form from his Australia side in the leadup to this defining quarter-final matchup. The Socceroos are unbeaten in their last eight fixtures, seven of which resulted in victories. What’s even more encouraging is Australia’s ironclad defense which has now kept seven clean sheets over that eight match span while conceding only once. The group stage saw the Aussies cruise by India and Syria by scores of 2-0 and 1-0, respectively, before playing out a 1-1 draw with Uzbekistan in a result that would have pleased both managers. They would then turn on the attacking flair as they scored four goals against Indonesia in a 4-0 round of 16 win.
South Korea have experienced a bumpier path to the final eight than their opponents today. The Taeguk Warriors saw their seven game winning streak come to an end after their 2-2 draw with Jordan in the second group stage game. After winning their opening match of the competition, South Korea haven’t managed to grab a victory in 90 minutes in the three matches since. If not for a goal in the ninth minute of added time, the South Koreans would have been sent packing in the round of 16 to Saudi Arabia. As things stand, Jurgen Klinsmann's squad were able to overcome the Saudis on penalties. Still, with goals conceded in every match of this competition (seven in total), the South Korea defense is not inspiring much confidence heading into this quarter-final showdown.

Australia & Korea Republic Squad Analysis
Graham Arnold looks set to be getting a few players back for this quarter-final. Both Lewis Miller and Thomas Deng are both expected to be available for selection after each suffering from an illness and thus failing to make the bench for the round of 16 win over Indonesia. Arnold will also be able to call upon right back Gethin Jones who was forced off in the 69th minute of the previous match with a groin injury. Scans have been positive and Jones has been cleared for selection against South Korea.
South Korea manager Jurgen Klinsmann isn't expected to alter his selection too much after making just a single change in the team's last match against Saudi Arabia. Without any notable injuries or absences to speak of, expect a near identical starting 11 here. Tottenham's Son Heung-Min is the obvious danger man for the South Korean side with the forward having netted 43 goals for his country in 121 appearances. The 31-year-old has two goals in this edition of the AFC Asian Cup.
