Elina Svitolina defeated Krueger in a hard-fought second-round tie at last year’s Indian Wells. A former semi-finalist at this event, the Ukrainian won in three sets on her way to the quarter-finals.
She will be hoping for a repeat as she seeks to defend 215 points. Svitolina has been one of the top performers in the WTA this season and so far has managed 16 wins in 19 outings.
Her performances have seen her return to the WTA top 10, where she currently sits as the world number eight. Svitolina, champion in Auckland and finalist in Dubai, defeated Laura Siegemund in three sets in the last round.
