Arthur Fils takes on Nuno Borges in the first round at Indian Wells. Both players are unseeded and the winner will face 23rd seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round of this outdoor hard court Masters 1000 tournament. Fils is 43rd in the latest world rankings but up to 37th in the live list. That's just three places below the career high he set earlier this year after making a strong start to 2024. The Frenchman made it to the last four in Auckland and met Borges in that tournament. He'd love a repeat of the win he had in New Zealand as only two games were dropped, all in the second set. Fils also made it to round two of the Australian Open. His form slumped with three consecutive losses (two on clay) before a quarter final in last week's Chile Open.

Nuno Borges is at 60th in the latest ranking list but down to 78th in the live rankings. That's because he's defending the points earned when winning a Challenger Tour event last March. The Portuguese player overcame that heavy loss to Fils in Auckland with a run to the last 16 in the Australian Open. He beat Fokina and Grigor Dimitrov before being beaten by Daniil Medvedev. His best performance since then has been a quarter final in the Los Cabos hard court tournament. He didn't build on that though and lost in his first match in Acapulco to Yoshihito Nishioka last week after winning the first set. He's 1-1 in previous meetings with Fils but his sole victory was on a lower tour in 2021 and on clay. Back on hard courts, we go for Fils to make it into round two.
