Fifth seed Arthur Fils and wildcard Joao Sousa will face off on Tuesday at the Estoril Open. The winner of this first-round tie will then take on Jurij Rodionov or Cristian Garin next. Arthur Fils has struggled this season. He has yet to hit the strides of last season and currently has compiled a 9-8 record. Last year the Frenchman had his best-ever campaign at tour level which culminated in his first two tour finals and a first-ever title. So far this year he has compiled a 9-8 record and has been defeated six times in his last nine matches. Fils had a strong start to the year, winning six of his first eight matches. He made the semifinals in Auckland and the quarters in Hong Kong. Fils is a decent player on clay courts but has this season struggled on the surface. He has lost three times in four clay outings. The 19-year-old suffered a first-round exit in Miami in his last match. He is currently placed at number 37 in the live ranking.

Joao Sousa starts the week ranked 274th in the live ranking. The veteran Portuguese athlete is a former Estoril champion and will be eager for another deep run in the competition. Especially as this is his last career appearance in this event. Sousa triumphed in the Portuguese Riviera in 2018. The 35-year-old has been competing in the challenger circuit this season and has so far compiled a 6-4 record. He has made the quarterfinals in all three tournaments he has taken part in. Sousa has in his career favoured the clay surface where he has won 279 total matches. Two of those have come in his three outings on the surface this year. Sousa announced earlier this year that 2024 will be his final year as a pro tennis player.
