The 2019-20 champions Arsenal are out to continue their fine run of form when they welcome third-tier outfit Wigan Athletic to the Emirates Stadium in the fourth round of the FA Cup. This is the second time that these two sides will meet in this competition. The former won the previous matchup between these two sides 5-3 on penalties in the semi-finals in the 2013-14 season. Here's our match prediction.

Arsenal are enjoying a great run this season across all competitions. The English side can potentially win four trophies this season if they manage to play their cards right after recently beating Chelsea to reach the EFL Cup final. Success in the FA Cup could see them reach the fourth round for the first time in three editions.

Wigan Athletic, on the other hand, have never progressed beyond the fourth round in the past seven editions and will be hoping to do one better this time around against a formidable opponent.

Arsenal - Wigan: Form Analysis

Arsenal dropped three points in their bid to lift the Premier League title for the first time since the 2003-04 season. They faced Brentford on Thursday and could only manage a point in a 1-1 away draw. This has seen them maintain a four-point cushion at the top of the Premier League standings.

Following that result, the Gunners still maintain an unbeaten run, going five matches without defeat across all competitions. During this period, they recorded four wins and one draw.

Mikel Arteta's men now focus their attention on the FA Cup. Their journey began in the third round and had no trouble beating Portsmouth 4-1 on the road.

Arsenal haven't progressed beyond the FA Cup fourth round since the 2019-20 edition.

Wigan Athletic are in a crisis heading into this crucial encounter. The visitors have are winless in six games, including a four-match losing streak.

Their most recent match was against Reading FC in League One. The final result was a 2-1 home defeat.

The Latics will be aiming for a return to winning ways as they shift their focus to the FA Cup. They began their journey in the first round, beating Hemel Hempstead Town 5-3 on penalties, which was followed by another penalty triumph against Barrow in the second round. The only convincing win in this competition was their most recent 1-0 away victory against Preston North End.

Arsenal & Wigan Squad Analysis

Arsenal come into the fourth round of the FA Cup with four players in the injury room. This includes Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz, Mikel Merino, and Max Dowman. Another player set to miss this crucial encounter is William Saliba, who is recovering from an undisclosed illness.

Gabriel Martinelli has played 82 minutes for the home team in just one appearance in this competition. Despite this, the Brazilian international is the team's top scorer with three goals to his name after his hat-trick against Portsmouth in the third round. The left winger is expected to feature in the starting line-up in a bid to extend his goal tally.

Gabriel Martinelli scored a hat-trick in his last FA Cup outing.

Meanwhile, Wigan Athletic have two players who are doubtful for the fourth round FA Cup clash. This includes James Carragher and Harry McHugh. Other than that, interim managers Glenn Whelan and Graham Barrow should be able to name a strong starting line-up.

Joe Taylor (on loan from Huddersfield) is expected to lead the attack this Sunday. The 23-year-old has three goals to his name in the EFL League One but has yet to find the back of the net in this competition and will be aiming to do so.

Arsenal - Wigan Key Points

  1. Arsenal have seen four of their last seven matches across all competitions produce over 3.5 goals.
  2. Wigan Athletic have conceded 15 goals in their last six matches.
  3. Arsenal are averaging 2.4 goals per game when playing at home.
  4. Wigan Athletic have seen over 3.5 goals in two of their last three away games.

Our Arsenal vs Wigan Prediction

This matchup between Arsenal and Wigan Athletic is a classic David vs Goliath clash. The Premier League outfit are expected to dominate proceedings from start to finish. It's worth noting that the former have avoided defeat in their last three meetings against this opponent, with two wins in the process. Their victory shouldn't be doubted in this one.

However, there's no value in picking Arsenal in the full-time market given their odds-on price. With Wigan's defensive frailties and Arsenal's explosive offense expect a high-scoring affair. Our Arsenal vs Wigan Athletic prediction: more than 3.5 goals.
