Ninth seed Maria Sakkari and the unseeded Arantxa Rus will face off this Wednesday at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. The two players will battle in the second round with the winner taking on Emma Raducanu or Elise Mertens for a place in the fourth round.

Arantxa Rus defeated fellow unseeded player Yuan Yue in straight sets in the first round on Monday. The victory ended a 12-year wait for a main drawn victory at SW19 for her. The Dutch national will now be seeking to set a new personal record in this major.

Rus, who has never won multiple matches at a major since 2012, has a third-round finish as her best result here. She is having a turbulent campaign and despite her win in the first round, has dropped 13 places in the live ranking. Now ranked 69th in the world, Rus has lost 21 of the 36 matches she has played.

Greek player Maria Sakkari has an incredible record against Rus. This should have her extremely confident of equaling her best record at Wimbledon. Sakkari, who has never progressed past the third round here, has won all five matches she has faced off with Rus.

One of those wins was in the first round of the 2021 Wimbledon edition. The Greek number one lost in the first round last season but this wasn’t the case this time around. She is here thanks to a 2-0 success over the qualifier McCartney Kessler which marked her first win on grass this season.

Sakkari had lost four straight matches before she arrived at the All England Club. Advancing to this round has moved the 28-year-old one place to eighth in the live ranking.
