Top seed Andrey Rublev will begin his Hong Kong Tennis Open campaign by battling the qualifier Liam Broady in the second round. The winner will then play either of Marc-Andrea Husler, Vitaliy Sachko, Borna Gojo, or Arthur Fils in the quarterfinals. Andrey Rublev ended the 2023 season disappointingly as he lost all three of his matches in the year-end ATP Finals. It was his fourth successive season in the Finals and the third time he had failed to get out of the round-robin stage. He should therefore be eager to start a new season with a title. Rublev won 56 matches last year which is the most he has managed in a single campaign. This allowed him to finish in a career-high ranking of world number five. He contested six finals and won two titles.

Liam Broady advanced to this round after getting the better of Pedro Cachin in his tournament opener. He won in straight sets with the second set ending 6-0. Broady, who started his Hong Kong campaign in the qualifying rounds, has won his three matches here without dropping a set. This should have him confident of causing an upset here. The Brit had a strong 2023 season and compiled a 45-28 record, though played predominantly in the challenger circuit. He won 23 of 32 matches on outdoor hard courts and played in three challenger finals, winning one. Broady, whose 2023 tour highlight was playing in the third round at Wimbledon, is ranked 108th in the world.
