In the second of the Group E matches at the 2025 African Cup of Nations, former champions Algeria and Sudan will be facing off. This group also has Burkina Faso and Equatorial Guinea. On paper, it looks like Algeria should be topping with relative ease as they make a 21st AFCON appearance. Below we have a peek at the match preview, stats, and two predictions.
This is the first time in 10 years that AFCON is being hosted in North Africa; the last time this happened, Algeria won their second title. Both of their titles were actually won in North Africa. The weather conditions favor the Fennecs, and being unbeaten in open play in four meetings with Sudan, they’ll be keen on a fast start.
Sudan will have the underdogs feel but will be keen on shocking Algeria, who are on a six-match winless run at AFCON. However, their own record in this competition doesn’t favor them. Sudan have won only one of their last 16 AFCON matches.

Algeria - Sudan: Form Analysis
Algeria comes into this competition ranked among the favorites, despite their dismal showing in the past two editions. Since beating Senegal in the 2019 final for their second title, Algeria haven't been able to win an AFCON match.
They will be looking to end a six-match winless run in this competition. However, three wins in five AFCON meetings with Eastern African teams will raise their hopes of doing better here. The Desert Warriors haven't lost in open play in 16 matches, winning eight times in the process.
With such a run, the North Africans will hope to banish the memories of five group stage eliminations in seven AFCON tournaments.
Across their last 16 AFCON matches, Sudan managed just one win.
Across the last seven AFCON editions, Sudan are only making a second appearance. They will be looking to add to their only African title, won in 1970. Reaching these finals is not only a show of their growth but also resilience, having done it against the backdrop of a civil war back home.
Ranked 118th in the world, the Sudanese come here as firm underdogs. That tag is further reinforced by a run of 13 winless outings in the last 14 matches. They lost eight times in that period and failed to score eight times.
This will be the third time the two nations clash in 2025; the earlier two ended in draws.

Algeria & Sudan Squad Analysis
Algeria are carrying into this tournament a star-studded squad, which blends experienced and upcoming stars. The most notable name is definitely Riyad Mahrez’s. The skipper has six AFCON goals going into his sixth AFCON tournament and will be expected to offer leadership to the pack.
In the circle of leaders, he will be joined by Baghdad Bounedjah, scorer in the final as Algeria won their second title. French legend Zinedine Zidane’s son, Luca, is expected to take up the starting position in goal after Alexis Guendouz’s knee injury.
Bounedjah scored twice in Algeria’s 4-0 win over Sudan in the 2021 Arab Cup.
Another former Frenchman, Houssem Aouar, had to withdraw from the squad after suffering an injury in training.
Meanwhile, Sudan are in good health, with no injuries reported ahead of this match. Yasser Mozamil will be the man relied upon for the goals. He scored the team’s latest one, against Bahrain.

Our Algeria vs Sudan Prediction
While Algeria have dominated this fixture, it rarely comes as a high-scoring match. In their meeting earlier this month, both teams failed to score, and in the preceding two, only four goals were scored. Across the last nine meetings between the nations, only one had over 2.5 goals.
In terms of recent form, there’s a strong likelihood that Sudan will struggle to cope with Algeria. They have one win in their last 14 matches, losing six times. Our prediction for Algeria v Sudan is for Algeria to win and under 2.5 goals.
Algeria vs Sudan - Other Interesting Predictions
Algeria to win to nil
Algeria have refurbished their squad, injecting new blood and blending the same with the key players. A stronger squad was witnessed in the qualifiers as Algeria scored 16 times and only conceded twice.
They should be able to deal with the recent injuries to key players, and having dominated East African teams works for them. The Desert Warriors have scored 10 and conceded just three in five AFCON matches against East African sides. Our second prediction here would be for them to win to nil.
