Saturday’s quarter-final action at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations gets underway with a mouth-watering matchup at the Marrakesh Stadium, where Algeria will take on Nigeria. The winner of this match between the Desert Warriors and the Super Eagles will meet either Cameroon or Morocco in the semi-finals on January 14. Check out our match prediction below!
Algeria came into the 2025 AFCON as one of the favourites to win the title, and so far, they have fully lived up to expectations, now set to feature in the quarter-final of the continental tournament for the seventh time. The Fennec Foxes have won all of their games in Morocco - the same feat they managed when they went on to win the competition in 2019.
Nigeria, meanwhile, have arguably been the most impressive team leading up to the last eight at AFCON 2025. Having failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, pressure is firmly on the 2023 runners-up to go one better this year and claim their fourth African crown. Let’s get into the key stats!

Algeria - Nigeria: Form Analysis
Algeria surged through the group stage of the 2025 AFCON with a perfect record, defeating Sudan, Burkina Faso and Equatorial Guinea. They scored seven goals in that period and conceded just once.
The Desert Warriors were then drawn against the fourth-placed finishers in 2023, DR Congo, in the last 16, and were held goalless in open play before finding the winner in the final minute of extra time.
The North African nation have now lost only one of their last 14 matches across all competitions - via a penalty shootout against the UAE - and have kept clean sheets in seven of their last nine games.
Nigeria is the highest scoring team at AFCON 2025!
Meanwhile, Nigeria is the only other team apart from Algeria to have won all three of their group-stage matches, recording victories over Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda to reach the knockouts.
In the Round of 16, the Super Eagles turned it up a notch and trounced Mozambique 4-0 to take their goals tally in this competition to 12, though they have only managed to keep one clean sheet.
Eric Chelle’s side have now won seven of their last 10 matches across all competitions (D1 L2) and have scored in each of their last 12, dating back to a shock 4-0 loss to Sudan at the CHAN tournament in August.

Algeria & Nigeria Squad Analysis
Despite the wealth of talented young players Algeria possesses, Riyad Mahrez is still the beating heart of the Fennec Foxes' attack, and he is their top scorer in this tournament with three goals in as many games.
Al Duhail attacker Adil Boulbina was the Desert Warriors’ saviour in the last 16, having come on in the 113th minute to find the winning goal, and he will be hoping to get the nod to start this one.
The Foxes were dealt a major blow during the group stage with Jaouen Hadjam sustaining an ankle injury, which ruled him out of the remainder of the tournament. He has reportedly returned to his club Young Boys to commence rehabilitation.
Ademola Lookman has seven goal contributions in three AFCON 2025 games!
The Atalanta forward has been the shining star of the Super Eagles' attack here in Morocco, and has been directly involved in 58% of their goals, netting three himself while setting up a further four.
Galatasaray’s talisman Victor Osimhen has bagged three goals and an assist in the competition. Raphael Onyedika has chipped in with two goals, while Alex Iwobi has been the team’s creative spark, picking up two assists in three appearances.
Panathinaikos forward Cyriel Dessers suffered heartbreak as his AFCON campaign was cut short due to injury. As a result, Akor Adams will likely continue to partner Osimhen in the Super Eagles’ attack.

Our Algeria vs Nigeria Prediction
While Algeria have been solid in defence in this competition, they were much less convincing against DR Congo in the Round of 16, as compared to earlier in the tournament against lower-ranked opposition.
Nigeria, on the other hand, have not been great in defence, but their attacking firepower is enough to strike fear in any team they come up against. We could go the distance in this match, but we fancy the Super Eagles to progress. Our Algeria vs Nigeria prediction is Nigeria to qualify.
