The semi-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations kick off at the Rabat Olympic Stadium with Algeria taking on Malawi on Wednesday evening. These teams came through the quarter-finals with 2-1 wins, and we are expecting both sides to get on the scoresheet here as well, as discussed in our match prediction below.
Les Fennecs have had one of the meanest defences in the 2026 WAFCON, and they held firm against Ivory Coast to book their spot in the final four of the continental competition for the first time. In doing so, the Greens have also earned their first-ever qualification to the World Cup, which will be staged in Brazil next year.
The Scorchers, on the other hand, have been the Cinderella story in Morocco this year. Ranked 153rd in the world, Malawi are the lowest-ranked team at WAFCON 2026, but they defied the odds by defeating Ghana on Sunday night to earn a place in the semi-finals on debut in the competition. Can they keep their historic run going in Rabat this week? Let’s get into the key stats!

Algeria W - Malawi W: Form Analysis
Algeria came through the group stage of the 2026 WAFCON in second place with six points, beating Senegal and Kenya 2-0 each either side of a 1-0 defeat to tournament favourites Morocco.
After Nsira Ouedraogo was sent off late in the first half of the quarter-final, the Fennecs made the most of their numerical advantage by overturning a 1-0 deficit to beat fancied Ivory Coast 2-1 on Saturday.
The Greens have now won four of their last five matches in all competitions and have conceded just two goals in this tournament, which is the second-best defensive record behind the Atlas Lionesses.
Malawi have reached the WAFCON semi-final in their tournament debut!
Malawi stunned the world by beating Nigeria in their opening match of the 2026 WAFCON and booked their spot in the knockout rounds with a 3-1 victory over Egypt before losing to Zambia 2-1.
The Scorchers then proved that their qualification to the last eight was no fluke, as they produced an incredible effort, coming back from a goal down to upset Ghana 2-1 on Sunday night.
Notably, Malawi’s three wins in this competition are the only victories they have managed since February in the COSAFA Cup. They are also the highest-scoring of the final four teams in the competition (9).

Algeria W & Malawi W Squad Analysis
Marine Dafeur has been the standout performer for Algeria in this year’s competition. The Bristol City midfielder leads the team with two goals in the tournament and set up the winner against Ivory Coast at the weekend.
Ines Khiri came off the bench at half-time in the quarter-final and netted the team’s leveller inside 15 minutes on the pitch, which could earn her a spot in the starting 11 for this upcoming fixture.
Saint-Malo’s Morgane Ikene was forced off with an injury in the first half against the Elephants and is a doubt for this match. Morgane Belkhiter is the most likely to step into defence if Ikene is unable to feature.
Temwa Chawinga is one to watch in this match!
The Kansas City forward has been nothing short of incredible for Malawi in the competition, having taken her tournament tally to four goals and two assists after another stunning showing against Ghana.
Chawinga is now second in the Golden Boot standings, just one goal behind Barbra Banda, while her sister, Tabitha, has two goals. Indeed, the Chawinga sisters have directly contributed to eight of the Scorchers' nine goals in this competition.
Malawi came away from their quarter-final victory with no new injuries. Lovemore Fazili only made two substitutions in the match and is likely to send out an unchanged 11 in midweek.

Our Algeria W vs Malawi W Prediction
Algeria may have received a slice of good fortune in the quarter-final after Ivory Coast were reduced to 10 players late in the first half, but they are now firm favourites to progress to the final.
However, Malawi are living a fairytale in Morocco this year, and with the Chawinga sisters leading the line, they have proven that they are able to compete with the best on the continent. Outscoring opponents has been the Scorchers' route to success in this tournament, and we feel they will need to do so again to progress from this one. Our Algeria W vs Malawi W prediction is BTTS.
