Only one place separates these two players in the current world ranking list. Fourth seeded  Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina is 28th and takes on the world number 29 and fifth seed Frances Tiafoe in the Estoril Open quarter final. The winner of this match could face top seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime or eighth seed Sebastian Korda in the last four. Davidovich-Fokina began this year ranked 50th but has had a solid 2022 so far. That's illustrated by the fact he's currently 20th in terms of ranking points earned this year, compared to 49th for his opponent. His big week was in Monte Carlo where he beat Novak Djokovic and Taylor Fritz before losing the final to Stefanos Tsitsipas. That was on clay and he's had more success in Estoril with a straight sets win over Bernabe Zapata Miralles.

Frances Tiafoe is just one place below his best ever ranking of 28th. The American will have one aim during this European clay court season and that's to win a match at Roland Garros. He's played their seven times, losing in the qualifying rounds once and the first round on six occasions. That's not to say he is a poor clay court player as he reached the final of this tournament four years ago. He's also won three Challenger Tour clay court titles. This year has seen him get to the last eight on clay in Houston but lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime in the last 16 in Barcelona last week. This week he's beaten Dusan Lajovic (after dropping the first set) and wildcard Nuno Borges (middle set lost). He's going to struggle here, back Davidovich-Fokina to get the win.
