Jelena Ostapenko, the 13th seed at Wimbledon, will begin her campaign in the first round against the wildcard Ajla Tomljanovic. The winner will play Daria Snigur or Oceane Dodin for a place in the third round.

Ajla Tomljanovic is back at SW19 after missing last year’s tournament due to injury. In her last two appearances in this major, she has made it to the quarter-finals and will hope to maintain this trajectory. The Australian is a strong grass player and is having quite the campaign on the surface this season.

She has won eight of the 10 matches she has played on grass and arrives after a runner-up finish in Birmingham. Though she doesn’t have the upper hand in this fixture, Tomljanovic’s only victory over Ostapenko came at Wimbledon. This was three seasons ago in one of her runs to the last eight. The 31-year-old former world number 32 I ranked 136th in the live ranking.

Jelena Ostapenko has won her first-round tie at Wimbledon five times in her last six appearances. Coupling this with her dominant record against Tomljanovic, she will be confident of making another winning start.

A semi-finalist in this major in 2018, Ostapenko has won three of four meetings with Tomljanovic. One was on grass on her way to the final in Eastbourne two seasons ago. Their most recent encounter came earlier this year at the Australian Open.

Ostapenko, a two-time grasscourt champion at tour level, won in three sets in the second round. The former French Open champion is however having a slow start to the grass season and has struggled in recent weeks. She has managed just one win in three grass matches. This year’s Adelaide and Linz champion starts her Wimbledon campaign as the WTA’s world number 14.

Our Ajla Tomljanovic vs Jelena Ostapenko Prediction

Our prediction for Ajla Tomljanovic v Jelena Ostapenko is for Ostapenko to win in three sets.

Ostapenko has had the upper hand in this fixture and has won three of four matchups with Tomljanovic. One of her victories was on grass and the most recent success came earlier this year at the Australian Open.

She should therefore have the momentum to get another win here especially as she has a strong record at Wimbledon. It is likely not to be smooth sailing as Tomljanovic is having an excellent grass campaign.
