The Western Cape Derby will play out on New Year's Eve when Cape Town Spurs face off against Cape Town City at the DHL Stadium. The hosts are languishing at the bottom of the PSL standings, while the visitors are in third place. Spurs’ return to the top flight has proven to be something of a nightmare so far. They have managed just four points in 15 league games and look destined to head back down to the NFD unless they can turn it around in the New Year. The hosts played out a 1-1 draw against Amazulu last week, marking just the second match this season that they have earned a point in and brought an end to a five-match losing streak. Unsurprisingly, Spurs are the worst-performing side in almost every statistical category, particularly defensively, where they have shipped 31 goals already, ten more than the next worst record held by Golden Arrows (21). Spurs are the clear underdog in this one.
Meanwhile, Cape Town City are at the opposite end of the table and involved in a heated battle for the CAF qualification spots. They have managed 26 points from their 15 league games and trail second-placed Supersport United by three points, while Orlando Pirates are just one point behind them. Stellies are also in the mix, three points behind but with a game in hand. The Citizens held Sundowns to a 0-0 draw last time out, which was the first match that the Brazilians dropped points in this season, following 11 consecutive wins. Away from home, City have won three of their last four but were beaten by cross-town rivals Stellenbosch in their last outing. Still, they are in much better shape than their opponents in this one and are heavily fancied by the bookies to win this match.
