It’s a massive relegation six-pointer battle between two teams that start this round in the Bundesliga bottom-four as Mainz host Union Berlin. This round 18 of the league will be played at the Mewa Arena on Friday with both teams needing points in their battle to avoid the drop. The hosts are 16th in the standings with 11 points while the visitors are 15th with 14 points, but with a game in hand. Mainz drew 1-1 with Wolfsburg extending their winless run in the league to seven matches. This sequence saw them draw five and lose two along the way. In fact, they have just one win in the entire league campaign, which came early in November against Leipzig. That win came at home and either way of that victory, Mainz have lost five of their last seven home league games although drawing the latest such match.

Union are only three points above the bottom-three and have a game in hand, although it’s against Bayern Munich, a team that’s in the title race. After a run of nine losses in a row from September to mid-November, Union have turned things around. The visitors have improved their season with two wins and two draws over their last five league games, losing just once. One of those wins came against tenth-placed Borussia Monchengladbach, which indicates their fortunes are on the rise. They would need that to improve their away form though, as Union have lost six of their last seven road trips in the league. The lone exception though, came in their last away game where they held Freiburg to a goalless draw.
