European football’s grandest stage in the women’s game belongs to FC Barcelona Femeni and OL Lyonnes once again, as the two powerhouses are set to collide in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final on Saturday at the Ullevaal Stadion in Oslo. 

The French champions are en route to a treble this season, having already beaten Paris Saint-Germain to the Coupe de France title on May 10, while they will battle Paris FC for the Division 1 Feminine trophy in the final next weekend. 

OL have won the UWCL eight times in the past - more than any other team in the competition - but their last triumph came back in 2022, when they beat their upcoming opponents 3-1 in Turin. Since then, Barca have secured two continental titles (2023 and 2024) and were beaten finalists last year.

Indeed, after suffering disappointment against Arsenal last year, Blaugrana have bounced back impeccably this term, ending the League Phase of the competition in top spot, before making light work of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in the knockout rounds to confirm our Women's Champions League predictions.

Barca have already wrapped up the league title this season and won the Copa de la Reina trophy last weekend. They are now riding an astonishing 34-match unbeaten streak across all competitions, dating back to last December (W31 D3)! 

While Lyonnes are the most successful team in the UWCL and beat the Spanish giants in their first four encounters in this competition, it was Barca who came out on top in the last clash, defeating the French side 2-0 in the 2024 final at Estadio San Mames.

Player Focus: Ewa Pajor vs. Melchie Dumornay 

As discussed in detail in our FC Barcelona vs Olympique Lyon prediction, the Spanish outfit has been nothing short of incredible in attack this season, having already scored 37 goals in this competition, 11 more than Lyonnes after 10 games apiece. 

The cornerstone of Barca’s sizzling attacking unit has been Ewa Pajor, who is the joint-top scorer in the competition with nine goals, and victory for the Pole will be extra special, as she has already lost the UWCL final five times in the past. 

Behind Pajor is the heartbeat of Barca’s attack, Alexia Putellas. Blaugrana’s skipper has notched up eight goals and provided four assists in this season’s competition, and she will be determined to mark what could be her final game for the club with another big performance. 

However, OL Lyonnes also have a superstar in their ranks in Melchie Dumornay, who has once again proven to be the team’s greatest attacking threat. The 22-year-old has five goals in the UWCL this season and enters the final after scoring a brace in the side’s 8-0 victory over Nantes. 

If Lyoness defeat Barca this afternoon, Dumornay would make history as the first Haitian footballer, male or female, to lift the Champions League trophy, while it would also significantly strengthen her chances of claiming the Ballon d’Or this season. 

Aside from Dumornay, Jule Brand will have a massive role to play here, given the absence of Kadidiatou Diani. Brand was exceptional in the semi-finals, scoring in both games against Arsenal to take her goal contributions tally in this competition to six (3 goals, 3 assists).
