12 Goals in Eight Games: Haaland Targets Another Leipzig Demolition

Matchday 4 in the UEFA Champions League continues on Wednesday night, and one of the standout fixtures on the stacked midweek schedule sees RB Leipzig playing host to Manchester City at the Red Bull Arena.

For Martín Demichelis’ defenders, Erling Haaland has become a familiar nightmare. The Norwegian has faced the Die Roten Bullen eight times across his spells with Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City, finding the net on an astonishing 12 occasions.

Haaland’s most remarkable display against Leipzig came in City’s 7-0 Champions League triumph on 14 March 2023 at the Etihad, where he scored five times before being substituted in the 63rd minute, becoming only the third player to register five goals in a single UCL match.

While Man City’s marksman has dominated many a defence in his career, scoring 310 goals against 91 clubs, Leipzig is by far his favourite opponent.

As mentioned in our Champions League predictions, Haaland arrives in East Germany as the joint top scorer in Europe’s top-tier club competition with four goals, though unlike the other four players on that tally, the 26-year-old hitman has reached that tally in just 180 minutes.

The Norwegian’s underlying numbers are equally impressive. He has significantly outperformed his xG in the UCL this season (2.19) and has attempted the third-most shots at goal and the joint-most shots on target (7) of any player across the first three matchdays.

Across all competitions, Haaland has smashed in 13 goals in 12 matches this season, with his four in Europe taking his Champions League tally to 61. He has reached the 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60-goal marks faster than any player in the history of the competition.

Fortress vs Frailty: Demichelis’ Wall Meets Maresca’s Shaky Backline

Leipzig defence

As a former defender himself, Martín Demichelis has done an excellent job of turning his team into a defensive monster this season. Leipzig have won all five of their home matches this term by a combined, genuinely staggering scoreline of 19-0.

Die Roten Bullen beat PSV 1-0 in their only home game in the UCL this season, but they conceded four to Como and five against Real Madrid on either side of that win, and this is by far the toughest opponent they have faced in front of their home fans this term.

Leipzig have not conceded a single goal at Red Bull Arena in the 2026-27 season!

Meanwhile, Manchester City head to Saxony searching for defensive stability after a poor run of results. Consecutive Premier League defeats against Aston Villa and Brighton & Hove Albion have intensified the scrutiny on Enzo Maresca and his defensive structure.

The Citizens’ inverted full-back system has left the centre-backs exposed on numerous occasions this season, creating opportunities for opponents to exploit on the counter-attack - a vulnerability PSG ruthlessly exposed in their 4-2 victory over City on Matchday 2.

One player City will need to keep an eye on is Haaland’s Norwegian compatriot: Antonio Nusa!

Nusa has been the star of the Bundesliga this season and became the first player in the league to reach 10 goal involvements this term (4 goals, 6 assists) after notching up a goal and an assist in the team’s 2-0 victory against Schalke over the weekend.

The 21-year-old winger has recorded five direct goal contributions in his last three matches across all competitions (1 goal, 3 assists) and has registered seven goal contributions in the team’s five home games this season (2 goals, 5 assists).
